Wayne Dalton Garage Door Repair & Installation

Wayne Dalton doors often use the TorqueMaster spring system, which fails differently from an ordinary spring. Here is what to know.

If your Wayne Dalton door has become very heavy or will not open, and you cannot see a spring above it, it probably has a TorqueMaster system. Stop using the opener and call 845-535-1141.

The TorqueMaster Spring System

Most garage doors have springs you can see on a bar above the door. On many Wayne Dalton doors the springs are instead hidden inside a steel tube, with a plastic housing at each end. It looks tidier and keeps the springs enclosed, but it has consequences:

  • You cannot see a break. There is no visible gap in a coil. The signs are a door that is suddenly heavy, lifts unevenly, or an opener that strains and stops.
  • The end housings wear. The plastic winding mechanism and cable drums at each end can strip, letting the door lose tension without a spring actually breaking.
  • Parts are specific. TorqueMaster springs and end assemblies are not interchangeable with standard torsion parts.

Repair or convert?

There are two sound ways to fix a failed TorqueMaster: replace it with new TorqueMaster parts, or convert the door to a standard torsion spring system with a new bar, springs, drums and bearings. Conversion uses heavier, widely available components and makes future repairs simpler; it needs enough headroom above the door. We will tell you which suits your door and why.

Do not try to unwind or open a TorqueMaster tube. The springs inside are wound under the same force as any other garage door spring.

Other Wayne Dalton Repairs

  • Cables, rollers and tracks.
  • Section replacement where the model is still made. The model label is on the inside of the door.
  • Opener repair, including older Wayne Dalton openers, for which parts can be hard to find; replacement is often the practical answer.

New Wayne Dalton Doors

Wayne Dalton makes steel doors in traditional and carriage-house styles, with and without insulation, as well as wood and contemporary aluminium-and-glass doors. For how replacement works see garage door replacement; for materials and insulation see garage door installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will not see it, because the springs are inside a tube. The door becomes very heavy, lifts unevenly or will not open, and the opener strains or stops.
Yes, on most doors with enough headroom. The tube and end housings are replaced with a standard torsion bar, springs, drums and bearings.
No. The enclosed springs are under the same tension as any garage door spring, and the winding mechanism can release suddenly.
