Noisy or shaking door? Call now and tell us what the door is doing.
✆ Call 845-535-1141Worn rollers are the most common reason a garage door gets loud and rough. Each roller carries part of the door's weight along the track every time it moves. When their bearings wear out, the door grinds, shakes and strains the opener, and a failed roller can let the door leave the track. Replacing them is one of the most worthwhile small repairs on a garage door. Call 845-535-1141 to have yours looked at.
Signs Your Rollers Are Worn
- Grinding, rattling or squealing that follows the door up and down.
- The door shakes or jerks instead of moving smoothly.
- A roller wobbles on its stem, or sits at an angle in the track.
- Flat spots, cracks or chips on the wheel.
- A roller slides along the track instead of turning.
- The opener works harder: it slows, strains or reverses on a door that used to run freely.
Not sure the noise is the rollers? This guide sorts noises by cause: why is my garage door making noise?
Roller Types
| Type | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic, no bearings | The basic roller fitted to many doors when new | Light use only; they wear quickest |
| Steel with ball bearings | A steel wheel on a bearing | Durable; noisier, and needs regular lubrication |
| Nylon with sealed bearings | A nylon tyre on a sealed bearing | The quietest option; a good choice where a room sits above or beside the garage |
Rollers also come in different stem lengths and wheel sizes, and heavier doors need rollers rated for the load. They are matched to your door and track, not swapped from a generic set.
How Roller Replacement Works
- Inspect the whole door. Noise blamed on rollers is sometimes a loose hinge, a dry spring or a track out of line.
- Replace the rollers, normally the full set, since they wear at the same rate.
- Handle the bottom rollers with care. They sit in the brackets that the lift cables attach to, which are under spring tension. Those are changed with the tension made safe, never by simply unbolting the bracket.
- Check and replace worn hinges, tighten track brackets and correct the track alignment.
- Lubricate, balance and test the door by hand and with the opener.
What You Can Do Yourself
- Lubricate steel roller bearings and the hinges twice a year with a garage door lubricant. Sealed nylon rollers need none on the wheel.
- Do not grease the track. It collects grit and makes rollers slide rather than turn.
- Look and listen through a full cycle once a month.
Leave the bottom brackets and the rollers in them alone. They are connected to the lift cables and the springs.
